Chapter 10, Legal, Ethical, and Pedagogical Issues, begins with two vignettes detailing answers to very important questions about confidentiality. Raymie Wayne’s first question deals with what to do when a student reveals a criminal background. Wayne then addresses the dilemma that occurs when a faculty member reveals unsolicited information about a student’s background. Many faculty and field directors do not know the details of legislation that affects actions related to confidentiality, or how to apply those laws to field education. Wayne clearly explains and uses scenarios to illustrate the role in field education of the university legal counsel, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the American with Disabilities Act, and the National Association of Social Workers’ (NASW) Code of Ethics. Chapters 9 and 10 supply concrete advice for designing or updating policies on student rights and gatekeeping.
