Chapter 11
Safety and Risk Management
Sharon C. Lyter
In chapter 11, Safety and Risk Management, Sharon Lyter describes the status of safety training. There is not sufficient research on best practices for harm reduction. There is also no mandate in the accreditation standards to ensure that this important preparation takes place in order to protect students, staff, and clients. In light of her research, Lyter recommends changes in the next iteration of the accreditation standards related to field, and adds a practice behavior relevant to safety. The author guides field directors in educating students and field instructors about personal safety, necessary insurance, incident reporting, and management of risk factors.
